Federation: the new social media paradigm
Social networking into a central silo is so 2010! If you use any of the “big four” – Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn or Google+, then you are social networking into a big, fat central silo.
There is a growing movement away from the privacy-invading, information-leaking and spyware-enabled social networking platforms that commonly infiltrate modern life. It’s called federated social networking, and it’s here to stay.
It’s time to take advantage!
Social Network Platforms
Social Media platforms have come a long way since 2010. No longer do you need to create an account with the big four in order to promote yourself.
The main federated, free software social media platforms fall roughly into two camps:
- Social Media (Facebook-like): Friendica, Hubzilla, Diaspora*
- Microblogging (Twitter-like): Mastodon, GNUSocial, Pump.io (identi.ca)
This is an unjust comparison though: each platform has features and functionality that goes beyond their mainstream counterpart.
Many of these social media platforms also interface with others: Friendica and Hubzilla, in particular, interact with all other types of federated social network platform.
Sharing to Other Services
Every man, woman and their respective dogs in search engine optimisation and social network marketing will try to sell you into the benefits of using the big four as a brand channel. What they fail to acknowledge is that you are competing against the millions of other businesses already paying for visibility and mindshare amongst their target audience.
However, while some people’s attention is only in one or two of these places, it still makes sense to send a message to them. This be achieved via a federated social network through clever configuration of the available tools and connectors.
Moving into the new era
Moving into the new era of federated social networking may seem daunting, but it is, in fact, extremely intuitive. The starting point would be to create an account on a social networking platform, such as the one we operate: friendica.me.
